Privacy Policy
Written plainly and out of character, and posted so you can hold us to it.
The short version
We collect the minimum we need, we tell you plainly what we do with it, we do not sell it or use it for advertising, and you can ask us at any time what we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it. None of that will change quietly.
What we collect, and why
Newsletter signup. Your email address and which papers you chose to receive. Used only to send you what you asked for. Every mailing carries a one-click unsubscribe; no hard feelings, the door stays open.
Letters, contact, and hosting forms. Your name, email address, and whatever you write to us. Delivered to our editorial inbox so a person can read it and answer.
Contest entries. The entrant's name, email, the category information the rules require, and the entry itself. Entrants under 18 must have a parent or guardian's consent, and we collect a parent or guardian's contact for that purpose and no other. We publish a winner's name and entry only with consent; for a minor, the parent or guardian's consent. We collect nothing from an entrant beyond what the contest needs.
Support and purchases. Payments are handled by our payment processor (Stripe). We never see or store full card numbers.
We do not require accounts to read anything on this site.
How your information moves
Form submissions are delivered to us by email through our delivery service (Resend) and then live in our correspondence, like letters in a desk. The newsletter may be delivered through Substack, which processes subscriber emails to deliver it. The site is hosted on Cloudflare, which keeps standard server traffic logs. These providers process information to provide their service to us and for no other purpose of ours.
What we do not do
No advertising. No ad trackers. No selling, renting, or trading of personal information. No data brokers. This site loads no third-party analytics or tracking scripts.
Two requests to other companies do happen when a page loads, and we would rather name them than let the sentence above do quiet work. The typefaces are served by Google Fonts, on every page. A book cover may be served by the Open Library on an entry where we hold no copy of our own, though at present every cover on the Shelf is ours. Each of those companies sees what any web server sees when your browser asks it for a file, including your network address. Neither is an advertising or analytics service, and we send them nothing about you.
Links that leave the site
Book links may go to Bookshop.org or Amazon; these are affiliate links and we may earn a commission on purchases made through them. Those sites, and Substack, YouTube, and the social platforms we link to, operate under their own privacy policies once you are there.
Children
The student contest is the only place we knowingly collect information from anyone under 18, always with parental or guardian consent and always the minimum the contest needs. A parent or guardian may review or delete their child's information at any time by writing to founders@76spirits.com.
Your choices
Write to founders@76spirits.com to ask what we hold about you, to correct it, or to have it deleted. A person answers, and deletion requests are honored except where we are required to keep a record. Form correspondence is retained as ordinary business mail and deleted on request.
Changes
Changes to this policy are posted here with a new date. A material change to what we collect or how we use it will be announced plainly, not slipped in.
The standard behind this page
This policy is the first statement of a larger standard we are building toward: your information is yours, consent is explicit, collection defaults to the minimum, and a human being answers for it.
